Job Advertisement: Director General of Svenska kraftnät

The Swedish National Grid (Svenska kraftnät) is tasked with creating conditions for an economically efficient, internationally competitive, sustainable, and secure electricity supply in Sweden from a societal development perspective. Svenska kraftnät is also the system responsible authority according to the Electricity Act (1997:585). Additionally, Svenska kraftnät is the electricity preparedness authority according to the Electricity Preparedness Act (1997:288) and the preparedness authority according to the regulation (2022:524) on the preparedness of government agencies.

The operations are divided into four branches:

  • system responsibility for electricity transmission systems,
  • managing and expanding the transmission network,
  • telecom, and
  • electricity preparedness.

The group consists of the authority, a subsidiary (Svensk kraftreserv AB), and seven associated companies: TSO Holding AS (part-owner of Nord Pool), Triangelbolaget D4 AB, Kraftdragarna AB, Energiforsk, eSett Oy, Nordic RCC AS, and Fifty AS.

The authority is led by a board of directors. The board shall consist of no more than seven members. The head of the authority and employee representatives at the agency are also included in the board.

At Svenska kraftnät, there shall be three advisory bodies: the electricity supply council, the electricity preparedness council, and the dam safety council.

The number of employees at the authority was approximately 1,600 at the end of 2024. Additionally, about 900 consultants are involved.

The total outcome for investments in 2024 amounted to 8.4 billion SEK. Svenska kraftnät finances its operations mainly through fees from its customers. The net revenue for the group was approximately 20 billion SEK during 2024. The electricity preparedness operations are financed through grants. The grant is estimated to amount to approximately 700 million SEK in 2026.

Svenska kraftnät has a profitability target that implies a return on adjusted equity, after a standard deduction for tax, of 4 percent, excluding profit shares from disposals in associated companies, over a business cycle.

Svenska kraftnät is located in Sundbyberg with offices in Gothenburg, Sundsvall, Luleå, Sollefteå, and Västerås.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who is a proven good manager and leader and has:

  • experience in change and development work in a leadership position,
  • experience in leading through other managers,
  • experience in leading and developing operations in a government agency,
  • understanding of the importance of total defense, security, and preparedness issues as well as systematic security protection work,
  • understanding of the significance of the electricity system for the competitiveness of the business sector and Sweden's security,
  • knowledge of the EU's organization and working methods,
  • experience working within the political structure in which the authority operates,
  • academic education or equivalent,
  • very good knowledge of Swedish and English.

You should also have the ability to:

  • lead and develop the authority in such a way that it contributes to achieving energy policy goals,
  • lead and develop operations within the framework of a good governance culture,
  • create engagement, participation, and develop employees,
  • lead and develop the authority so that different interests are coordinated,
  • work strategically with competence supply,
  • represent the authority both internally and externally, including internationally,
  • represent employer interests and work with other agency heads to develop the public employer policy.

It is advantageous if you have:

  • knowledge of the electricity system and experience in developing a reliable electricity supply system, electricity issues, or equivalent work in other critical sectors,
  • experience in security, total defense, and preparedness issues,
  • experience in information and cybersecurity issues,
  • experience in the infrastructure area or in working with large projects and procurements.

Only Swedish citizens can be appointed as Director General of Svenska kraftnät. The position is classified in a security class. Security clearance with a background check will be conducted before a decision on employment.

Salaries are individual and determined based on the requirements of the position and the qualifications and experiences of the manager.
